Monster Chiller Thriller Wine VIII – Episode #386

In this special Halloween themed episode of 1337 Wine TV, Mark reviews 3 Port wines kindly donated to him by Michelle Keene of Calhoun & Company Communications. First up is the Warre’s Otima 10 Year Old Tawny Port. Next is the Dow’s 2011 Late Bottled Vintage Port. Finally he reviews the Cockburn’s Special Reserve Port. In addition to reviewing the wines he pairs each wine with a suggested candy; Dots, Kit Kat, and Butterfinger.

    Mark, relying on the producer information leads you into some strange emphases and perhaps mis-conclusions. Reading the producer’s tasting notes before tasting yourself may be the thing best avoided. I’m not going to analyze all them for you, but the way to improve is to try to find as objective information as possible. And send me a few cases of that Dow’s 2011 Late Bottled VIntage Port for $25 each (the one that has gotten 99 points from the Spectator). Actually it was the Vintage Port, not the Late Bottled Vintage port, from that year, that scored 99, and the cost is closer to $250 than $25.

      I know it’s been a few months since your comment, but I don’t get a lot of comments on the site. Anyway, as far as producer info. I research each wine. Sometimes it’s the info provided by the company that supplies the samples. Typically I’ll go to the winery’s website regardless of whether I got a free sample or I paid for it. In general I ignore tasting notes (as in nose & palate and other marketing fluff) as I don’t not want to be influenced while doing the review. I will sometimes look at tasting notes afterwards to see what they say and I either agree or disagree with their tasting notes. The other information I use is to give the back-story of the winery and the wine. I don’t necessarily feel that knowing a wine’s terroir, technical info, etc. is a bad thing. I’m looking for typicity in these cases. Does the wine smell and taste like it’s supposed to. But that’s the same for any wine that I see the front label of even if I don’t look at anything else. These aren’t blinds. For an episode like this, it’s pretty much me having fun with the whole Halloween thing. I don’t take it too seriously, but I do want to give an honest evaluation of the wine.
